He, who maintains equanimity of mind, instead of becoming miserable in bad time
of his life, learns lesson from there. Thus he transforms even bad time of his
life into gold. There could be no good of a person who has a mind full of
cravings. If temperature of body has gone up due to mental agony, there is no
use of applying sandalwood to body.

He, who generates lot of false expectations from any of his actions, cannot
perform effectively and efficiently. His mind is always occupied with the
thought as to what will he gain from his work. Therefore he is not able to
concentrate on his work. As poison spoils food, false expectations spoil work.
करावी ते पूजा मनेचि उत्तम ।
लौकिकाचे काम काय असे ।।
कळावे तयासी कळे अंतरीचे ।
कारण ते साचे साचा अंगी ।।
अतिशयांती लाभ किंवा घात ।
फळ देते चित्त बीज ऐसे ।।
तुका म्हणे जेणे राहे समाधान ।
ऐसे ते भजन पार पावी ।। ४६
The best worship of God can be performed by mind. There
is no need of instruments and implements for doing puja. The purpose of worship
is to understand mind, to understand truth. The final benefit or loss is caused
by mind. Mind is the seed that gives birth to the tree of action.
भोगे घडे त्याग ।
त्यागे अंगा येती भोग ।।
ऐसे उफराटे वर्म ।
धर्मा अंगीच अधर्म ।
देव अंतरे ते पाप ।
त्यागे अंगा येती भोग ।।

He who acts renouncing his ego, actually does a sacrifice. He who renounces his actions and keeps his ego is not doing a sacrifice in fact. The position of dharma is somewhat paradoxical. A wish that distances from truth is sin. The flaming of desires is absurd. One could benefit only from actions based on intelligent thinking.

He, who performs sacrifice in fire, offers grains to flames of fire. He doesn't burn aversions and cravings of his mind that he ought to have burnt. He is becoming tired unnecessarily instead of meditating on Panduranga. He, who writes lot of religious books for the sake of recognition in society, forgets to remember God. He who goes on pilgrimage or undertakes penance raises his ego. He, who donates money, gives away his wealth but adds to his ego. Tukaram Maharaj is of the opinion that all these persons have missed the essence of worship and are doing something not conducive for dharma.

A monkey puts its hand in a vessel containing
peanuts. After taking peanuts in its hand it cannot take out its hand as the
mouth of the vessel is not big enough. The monkey for the sake of handful of peanuts
does not go away and is caught.
A parrot sits
on a string laid by the hunter. The straw rolls over and parrot falls. Due to
high voltage fear the parrot firmly grasps the string and forgets that it has
two feathers to fly away. The parrot is caught ultimately.
Tukaram Maharaj says that it is not surprising if
creatures without brains behave like this. It is surprising to see human beings
foregoing their greatest interest for a pittance.

If someone, who is not from a good family or caste, makes a
good point then we should listen to him.
One should not abstain from enjoying inner stuff of coconut
just because it has a hard outer wrapping.
Our relatives are good as we remember God for their welfare.
Pearl has value though it has been supported by lace.

Tukaram Maharaj says that he will do his best to
walk the path of righteousness.
He will speak the undeniable truth. He will do what
noble people have done.
One who renounces actions without knowing the truth
is charlatan.
One who doesn't have courage to walk the path of
truth is doubtful about any need for devotion.

One who speaks a lot without
having courage to act on his words, is a useless fellow. Bragging is at the
root of absurdity.

Tukaram Maharaj explains a very simple law here. One
kills someone very brutally. He thinks that he is very powerful, cunning,
tactful etc.
But he should understand that he has raised a debt
for himself. This debt will be discharged when same thing is done to him.
Those who ask something in return for their devotion
to God are foolish.
A kid who plays all time is bound to have body pain.

Porridge is served on a gold platter and offered to a dog.
Pearl is tied to donkey's neck.
Swine is perfumed with musk.
Great scholar exhorts a deaf person.
Whether these things make any sense?

understands devotion.

God has a thirst for love. He eats with great
delight the fruits earlier tasted by Shabri and served to him with love.
Similarly he eats with great love food offered by Sudama and doesn't say that
the food is disconfirming or meager.

People who empathize with those who are sucked up
and afflicted should be identified as good people. One can experience divinity
in their association.
Like butter the hearts of good people melt when they
see others in agony.
They provide support to them who don't have any
support.
They are as kind to their servants as they are to
their children.
Tukaram Maharaj confirms many times that these
people are effigies of God.

There are many who proclaim themselves as saints.
How can we accept unless we see their behavior? There appears a stream of water
only for a while after it rains. Later not a drop of water is seen. A particle
of snow appears like diamond as long as it doesn't meet a hammer.

म्हणउनी शांति धरा ।
उतराल पैल तीरा ।।
खवळलिया काम क्रोधी ।
अंगी भरते आधी व्याधी ।।

There is no happiness greater than the peace of mind.
Everything else causes sorrow. Therefore make your mind peaceful to see the
inner light. One with a mind agitated by anger and lust has to suffer ensuing
restlessness. A peaceful mind is free from such sufferings.

A person who vomits has to bear pain of vomiting and his effort of eating also becomes futile. A person was chased by a thief. He ran with his belongings up to the limit of his village but lost his life due to stress. Of what use are his efforts of making up to the limit of his village? It is very easy to talk big but it is very difficult to show courage in the battlefield.
